Paresh Rawal is now the undisputed king of comedy in Bollywood. Although he started his career in the eighties doing villainous and supporting roles, his career as a comedian kick-started in the late nineties. It was in the film 'Andaz Apna Apna', Rawal showed that he has got tremendous potentials to be one of the best comic actors in the industry. His roles of Teja and Ramgopal Bajaj in the film are still fresh in the minds of many a people who have ever seen the film. That was just the start…since then there is no looking back for this witty man who makes us laugh with such an ease.
Priyadarshan's 'Hera Pheri' (2000) opened up a new chapter for Rawal in his film career. This rib-tickling comedy has been one of the best comic movies to have ever been made in Bollywood. Paresh Rawal's role of Babu Bhaiya aka Baburao Ganpatrao Apte created laugh riot throughout the movie – thanks to the splendid performance by Akshay Kumar and Suneil Shetty also. For his performance in Hera Pheri, Rawal won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 2001.
The most striking thing about Paresh Rawal's comic sense is that his comic timing is accurate and uncanny. He spells riot laughter in whatever he speaks. He creates storm in the tea cup – all through his comic wizardry. Not only in 'Hera Pheri', in other films like 'Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega', 'Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar', 'Aankhen', 'Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin', 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Awara Paagal Deewana' (Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 2003), 'Jodi Kya Banayi Wah Wah Ramji', 'fun2ssh', 'Aitraaz', 'Hulchul', 'Garam Masala', 'Deewane Huye Paagal', 'Malamaal Weekly', '36 China Town', 'Phir Hera Pheri', 'Chup Chup Ke', 'Golmaal', 'Bhagam Bhag', 'Hattrick', 'Cheeni Kum', 'Fool N Final', 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa', 'Welcome' etc. he has shown his comic prowess in the most unique manner possible.
'Hungama' (2003) is one more major comic film in Paresh Rawal's career. Case of mistaken identities and comic confusion that come in its wake, create a riot in Priyadarshan's 'Hungama'. A remake of a Malayalam film by Priyadarshan, 'Hungama' stands out for its dialogue by Neeraj Vohra and the performance of Paresh Rawal.
After proving his mettle in Bollywood, this versatile actor is now getting ready for his first international project. "It's called 'The Virgin Goat'. It is a lovely script. I play a villager who is taking his goat-on-heat for mating. It's entirely the story of my character," Paresh Rawal said. What's more, the current year has a busy schedule for this comedy king. Films like 'Mumbai Meri Jaan', 'Familywala', 'Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam', 'Fauj Mein Mauj', 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', ' International Hera Pheri' etc. are already in his kitty for some of which he has already finished shooting.
Among the present lot of comic actors like Rajpal Yadav, Boman Irani etc, Paresh Rawal is the one who has done the most number of movies. Over the years, this comic prodigy has proved through his acting skill what it needs to be a king – a comedy king.
