This is the time for change, this is the time of the new wave. And the newage zephyr is simply making the scene more attractive, more alluring. In Bollywood, filmmakers are no more venturing into those kungfu-hustle stuffs – newage movies with simple and sweet plots are eating the popularity pie – all in an exquisite manner. Recently released movies like ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’, ‘Kismat Conenction’ and ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ neither has big starcasts nor daredevil acts, still, these movies have done exceptionally good at the box office. What’s special in them? Perhaps, tastes are changing for many…if not for all!
In approach, ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ is a completely refreshing film with a new casting. With newcomer Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza in the lead, the film is an innocent love story sans any unnecessary mush, hence, matching to the contemporary times. Debutant director Abbas Tyrewala must be applauded and given credit for the honest adaptation of day to day life story through his script on juvenile college life, friendship, love, acquaintance, loss of chemistry between pals, pang of separation, and realization of the withdrawal of possessiveness, and a hallmark happy reunion with a little flaw at climax by finding answer to a simple question “can a guy and a girl simply remain friends.” Keeping in mind the younger generation, the plot of the movie has been deliciously cooked. A.R. Rahman’s music is refreshing as ever…the song “Pappu Can’t Dance” simply resembles with “Papa Kahte Hain” from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak of Aamir Khan who has produced ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. In a word, ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ is an amazing movie on urban youth psychology on the idea of best friends who don’t realize they are in love.
Aziz Mirza’a ‘Kismat Konnection’ is also a catchy film without any complicated plot. The film tells the story of two youngsters who met by accident and become lucky charms for each other. With Shahid Kapoor and Vidaya Balan in the lead with some really cool songs, ‘Kismat Konnection’ has done a good job at the box office. The film has simply established the fact that ‘fate’ is one thing which can change our lives. A moment, a decision, a direction…it can change our lives as well as surroundings. Some call it luck; some fate. For the ones who don’t believe in these, it’s a mere coincidence. And for some it is just probability! Whatever it is, we got our dose, we enjoyed the movie, and we cherished vidya - the lucky charm that Shahid was always looking for.
Pritish Nandy Communications’ ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’ is a very light movie featuring the talented Ranvir Shorey and the hot Mallika Sherawat. It’s a comic film in a new way of storytelling. Brilliant performances by Ranvir Shorey and Mallika Sherawat along with focus on some sensitive aspects of relationships – the movie has caught the fancy of many a filmgoers in the country. Opening for the film is good – thanks to the melodious tracks also for bringing the positive for the film. Truly, the film has got something new to offer - simply worth watching.
So, it can be said that despite big stars and much money put into it, a film can do good if the plot is handled properly, if the story is told in tandem. The rest is all obvious…newage movies are making their mark…
