Anil Kapoor fetched global acclaim with 'Slumdog Millionaire' and '24'. And yet the actor, who's spent over three decades in Hindi cinebiz, has two more reasons to beam. Rhea Kapoor, his younger daughter frontlines 'Aisha' as a hands on producer, while his elder daughter Sonam Kapoor essays the eponymous role in a flick dominated by a yuppie female cast and crew, and helmed by Rajshree Ojha
He's in top form and gushing ninety to the dozen at a radio promotion event for his forthcoming flick 'Aisha'. The Indianised version of the classic Jane Austen novel 'Emma' finds expression as 'Aisha', produced by Rhea Kapoor and starring elder sibling Sonam.
Proud father Anil Kapoor can barely hide his excitement; the responses are swift, the enthusiasm quite infectious. Lauding tunesmith Amit Trivedi and citing him among the best talent to have emerged in moviebiz since the last five years, Kapoor confesses to being realistically sanguine of his rom com, which boasts of a youthful cast and crew; an ensemble, that is predominantly female.
Hailing women as a superior species, Kapoor opines that they "multi task better" and that the predominant feminine factor in 'Aisha' is the "best part about the film."
Presenting excerpts from a chat with the Women Empowerment Ambassador of moviedom, Mr. Anil Kapoor
What do you think is unique about your film 'Aisha'?
Aisha is releasing on the 6th of August, 2010. I don't think that a film like this has ever been made in India where two sisters are involved, one is a producer and the other is an actor in the film. My younger daughter Rhea has produced the movie and elder daughter Sonam is acting in the film. This movie is special because both my daughters are involved in it, all the way, influencing all the decisions, including selection of the director, music director, other cast and crew members of our film.
How would you describe the movie?
This film is a rom com i.e. a romantic comedy where there is romance and fun. The film's name is 'Aisha' because it based on Aisha's point of view. It's a story about six to seven friends and everyone has nice characters to play. Arjun's character is played by Abhay Deol, Shefali is played by Amrita (Puri), Cyrus (Sahukar) is playing Ranbir, a new girl Lisa Hayden is also being introduced in the movie. In fact, Amrita and Lisa Hayden are both being introduced into films by us.
We've heard that your entire unit was very young
Absolutely! This a movie by the young and for the young. The average age of people involved in this movie is 23 years! The director, art director and the costume designer, all are youngsters. Abhay's costumes have been done by Kunal Rawal who is a young guy. The whole film is about youth and it is lot of fun.
Have you taken the forefront or allowed Rhea to run the show as a producer?
I'm very happy to be associated with the filmeven though it was only for signing cheques! I have the produced the film in the background. The rest of the things that a producer does, like casting and the others jobs have all been done by Rhea.
Would you term your film as a "family movie"?
Call it whatever you want to, but go and watch the film.
Give us some insight into the music of 'Aisha'
I have come here to promote the music. As you know, when the music was launched I was not even invited! They told that the movie is for young people and I am no more a youngster, so I need to go in the background. But when I heard the music, I felt that the music needs to be promoted. The music in this film should be heard by everybody. The music director of this film is Amit Trivedi.
How would you describe Amit Trivedi as a music composer?
In the last five years, he is the best talent to have entered the film industry. He is surely one of the best. So, he should be supported and backed and he has done a fantastic job. Every song, the way he has composed it, the orchestration is terrific. Javed (Akhtar) has written the lyrics of the songs in the film. So I like the combination of these two. Let's see if the audiences too like it. Personally, I love the music of the film!
As an actor how would you rate Sonam's acting skills?
I would want people to judge her acting. Who am I to judge? I have not reached that stage where I can comment on people, but I will only say that she has to improve. And she is trying her best to improve more and more. Every actor, no matter how many number of films he or she has done, has room for improvement and that's what I want. She should try to become better and better with every film.
But can any actor be held totally responsible for a film?
Exactly! See, ultimately, acting is not a single man's job; you need to have a good co star, director, writer. It's a complete team work effort. Sometimes people comment that the actor has not done a good job. But the mistake is not only on the part of the actor. Any film works in totality.
How well does Aisha's character match that of Sonam's in real life?
Everyone of you, somewhere or the other, will get a glimpse of your own character in 'Aisha'. Today's youth will identify with the character at some point or the other. This is the USP of the film and that is why I thought I should make the film.
What made you cast Abhay Deol in the film?
Abhay Deol's casting in this film was not my choice. I had thought of taking some other actor or may be Imran Khan. My daughter Rhea and the writer of the film Devika Bhagat had made their choice and it was their decision completely. They said that if anyone fits the role of Arjun Burman, it is Abhay. They were completely right because it is very unconventional. The interesting part of the movie is how an impossible looking love story develops into one! Casting is a very important factor of the film. If it is right, everything in the film turns out good automatically.
Since 'Aisha' is an "inspired version" of the Jane Austen classic novel 'Emma,' what's your take on the adapted screenplay and the director Rajshree Ojha?
Rajshri is too talented. I think for their first film, the director and the writer Devika have done a really good job. I am extremely happy. Also I narrated the script to few of my friends including Javed (Akhtar) and they said it was a fantastic script. Few other friends like Ferozji (Feroz Abbas Khan) and the team people told us to be careful while translating the script into Hindi. Manu Rishi has done a great job of the dialogues. I am looking forward to know what kind of reaction the film will get, because it is entertaining, but done in a sensible way.
Do you think Sonam and Abhay's chemistry in the film will rock the box office, as in your style will it be 'jhakaas'?'
Its too early to say that. I think it will, but I may be wrong.
This time around, women are at the forefront of your home production totally.
I think that this is the best part of 'Aisha'. I feel that women are superior to men and I'm not saying this for effect because this is a Press meet. Women can multi task easily .They can do the household chores at the same time work or do social work, also look after children, themselves, look after their parents and also the husband's parents. And I feel that film making is also a multi tasking job, it's like gathering people from different communities. Also, women are well organised. They are the future, and there will be many more women executives, CEOs directors etc. in the next 20 years.
What do you think about radio as a medium to promote films?
I've had a wonderful experience with radio. Right from the time of Amin Sayani. In my childhood, I used to go to his studio when my father used to make movies. He used to make radio programs and I used to get so excited after hearing them. That excitement of mine has remained with me. I feel that I am coming back to it. Also, the importance of radio is increasing day by day. I fell radio is better for your health, it is strain free as compared to TV, where you have to hear and see at the same time. Whereas one can listen to the radio and relax or do other jobs, at the same time.
According to you, how much sense of cinema do Sonam and Rhea have?
They are young now. They have to go farther than this. This is just the beginning. For Rhea, it is her first film. And for Sonam, I feel people have supported her since her first movie. Sonam has been accepted whole heartedly by her co stars and directors. Acceptance is a very big thing.
Why would you recommend 'Aisha' to audiences?
Its fresh, young. It has lots of fun and entertainment. The best part is that you can watch the film with the entire family. These days, it's very rare to get a film which you can see with everyone in the family. And it's a film that everyone can relate to.
